Dr. Hwang is a physician and researcher on homelessness and health. He is known for his research on deaths among homeless people and issues such as barriers to accessing health care, infectious disease outbreaks, substance abuse and harm reduction, injuries and victimization, and the management of chronic diseases among people experiencing homelessness.

Allison Scott, MSc, is currently working with Dr. Hwang on her doctoral dissertation, a community-based participatory research study that is investigating factors leading to pregnancy and HIV risk among female street youth in Toronto. Ms. Scott's innovative project is funded by a grant from the Ontario HIV Treatment Network.
